Handwritten poem on vintage yellow lined legal paper, likely a personal family keepsake or draft. The verses reflect on a "little sis" growing up, moving from being a "babe" to "ten and four" (fourteen). Written in pencil with a gentle, nostalgic tone, the piece captures a snapshot of family life and sentiment from a bygone era. The paper features traditional red margin lines and horizontal blue ruling, characteristic of mid-century stationary.
Condition Description: Item shows significant signs of age including heavy creasing from being folded, edge wear with small tears, and overall yellowing/discoloration of the paper. Pencil marks are faded in areas and there are some crossed-out words in the final stanza.
You would never guess our little sis
Was getting on in years
And she is facing life's battle now
With all its smiles & tears.
Yes, our little sis is getting big
She is a babe no more
She's getting older all the time
And now she's "ten and four".
Just such a short time ago
She played with her blocks & doll
But she feels too old now
For all that fal-de-ral.
It's fun to play make-believe
With doll & such, but then
It's time to think of serious things
When you are "four and ten".
Good luck to you, our little sis
We know you'll keep those charms
You learned so many years ago
While in your mother's arms.
May fortune always smile
And have joy for you in store
We know you'll be just as sweet
When you're many times "ten & four".
