This exceptional handwoven Indonesian warp ikat textile comes from theSoutheast Asian textile collection of former U.S. Ambassador to Singapore HarryThayer, a noted collector of regional tribal and ethnographic textiles. Diplomatsstationed in Singapore during the 1960s–1980s often acquired textiles directlythrough regional dealers, embassies, and government sponsored artisancooperatives.
This dramatic monochrome textile was likely woven in West Timor (TimorTengah Selatan region), Indonesia, sometime between the 1960s and 1980s. Theareas around Amanuban, Kefamenanu, or South Central Timor are known formonochrome warp ikats with elongated naga or dragon motifs and narrowceremonial formats.
The inscription woven into the design looks like “HDN-SA” or “HON-SA.” Itprobably refers to a specific workshop or cooperative.
The cloth has a tight, dense weave and notable stiffness.That “springy” structure is common in heavily tensioned handwoven ikats andalso suggests it may have been starched or finished with rice sizing. This appearsto be unused and unwashed.
The selvages are intact and hand woven. The fringe has beentwisted by hand after weaving.
The graphic black-and-white design feels remarkably modern but actually hasdeep roots in Indonesian weaving traditions. Long and narrow, it’s ideal fordisplay as a wall hanging, table runner, bench textile, or collector’s displaypiece.
This measures 28 ½” wide by 120” long, including the 5” fringe at both ends.Weighs 1 lb 5 oz.
In excellent vintage condition with no holes, tears, or damage observed. This waswell stored. Fringe shows minor irregularity and light tangling consistent withhandmade textiles. Textile retains a firm, springy structure and displaysbeautifully.
