This is a vintage silver-plated wine tastevin from the prestigious Château de Meursault estate in the Burgundy region of France. Tastevins are traditional French wine-tasting cups used primarily by cellarmen, winemakers, and sommeliers.
Before modern electric lighting, winemakers stepped into pitch-black or candlelit cellars to test their barrels. These silver-plated facets acted like tiny mirrors, catching the weak candlelight and amplifying it through the liquid. This allowed the taster to clearly inspect the wine\'s color, clarity, and catch any hidden sediment. Important if you are selling world class burgundy wines.
On this tastevin, the flat thumb handle features the engraved name of the estate alongside their classic crowned lion crest. The interior bowl is designed with traditional reflective dimples and ridges.
The center features a smooth, polished dome. It is a beautiful, classic piece of French barware, perfect for a sommelier, wine collector, or as a decorative trinket dish.
My parents toured the burgundy region while staying at a friend’s little chateau and came back with a couple of these.
