Vintage Cameroon Grassfields Bamileke-Style Wood Helmet Mask with Metal Overlay :
$990.00

The mask, purchased in Cameroon in 1982, is carved from a single substantial block of wood and combines a strongly modeled human face with applied metal sheeting, cowrie-shell ornament, andcarved subsidiary human figures positioned along the sides. These materials are closely associated with status, wealth, royalauthority, and ceremonial display in the Cameroon Grassfields. The large hollowed interior confirms that it was conceived as a wearable helmet mask rather than simply as a wall decoration. The irregular metal covering, losses, oxidation, worn wood, andaccumulated surface patina are consistent with considerable age and use.The condition is noticeably worn, with areas of lifting or damaged metal, surface losses, cracking, abrasion, and evidence of old repairs or later stabilization. These issues reduce value somewhat, but they also indicate a long working history rather than recent decorative manufacture. The 1982 Cameroon purchasehistory is useful provenance, especially when considered alongside the construction and wear. Conservatively dated circa 1940s–1970s. The combinationof cowries, metal appliqué, human figures, substantial scale, and age makes it a more desirable example than a typical later tourist-market Grassfields mask. The mask is 14 inches tall, 12 inches wide, and 3 inches deep.

The accompanying human figures may represent:

  • Royal attendants or members of the chief’s court
  • Ancestors supporting or protecting the central personality
  • Subjects acknowledging the authority of a ruler
  • A community surrounding an important individual
  • A proverb or local historical narrative

Physically the mask shows:

  • A deeply hollowed wooden helmet-form core
  • A face covered with thin sheets of worked metal
  • Metal shaped over the forehead, cheeks, nose and mouth
  • Small nails, staples or fasteners securing the metal
  • Raised or embossed decoration worked into portions of the sheeting
  • Carved human figures incorporated around the face
  • Rows of organic-looking projections or attachments along the sides
  • A dark, aged surface on both the wood and metal
