Up for sale is a fascinating piece of mid-century American law enforcement and competitive shooting history. This is a custom-made hard-shell Bullseye Pistol Range Box (Shooting Box) originally owned by Stuart Ashley Senneff Sr. (1903–1991), the long-serving Police Chief of Miami Shores, Florida (appointed in 1948).
Unlike standard luggage, this specialized case is designed for a target shooter's bench. The face swings open to reveal a tiered shelving system meant to hold target pistols, ammunition, and shooting optics upright at the firing line.
Historical Significance & Provenance
• The Owner: The front face features beautiful, crisp gold-stamped lettering reading: "S. A. SENNEFF / MIAMI SHORES / FLA." The top of the box retains its vintage blue label tape reading "STUART ASHLEY SENNEFF SR." Chief Senneff was a highly prominent figure in mid-century South Florida law enforcement and an avid competitive marksman—a common trait among elite police chiefs of the era.
• The John Giles Gunsmith Connection: Pasted securely inside the lid is a phenomenal piece of shooting history—a typed instructional note reading: "To Move sight to the right Turn wheel toward you." This instruction specifically references custom work done by John Giles (of the legendary Giles .45 Shop in Florida). Giles was one of the most famous Bullseye gunsmiths of the 1950s–1970s, renowned for building elite precision heavy-slide .45s featuring a signature "wagon-wheel" rear sight adjuster. This note bridges Chief Senneff directly to one of the greatest custom firearm builders of the 20th century.
Condition Report
This item is in honest, field-used vintage condition, showing excellent character and a genuine "battle-scarred" look from decades of range use:
• The brown faux-alligator / embossed leather exterior shows heavy scuffing, edge wear, and localized flaking.
• The bottom wooden base trim is exposed on one corner where the outer wrap has worn away.
• The original metal hardware, piano hinges, and central latch show a dark, rusty patina but remain completely structural.
• The interior embossed lining is remarkably well-preserved, and both the exterior gold stamping and internal Giles note are fully legible.
• The leather carry handle is a vintage replacement that remains strong and intact.
Dimensions & Details
