BUCK’S STATEMENT:
Before Hawaii became the 50th state, it lived in the American imagination as something almost mythical—a faraway paradise reached by long flights or even longer boat rides. This piece feels like it came home in a suitcase sometime in the late 1940s or 50s, picked out from a small shop near the shore, wrapped carefully alongside postcards and film rolls. Back then, bringing back a souvenir like this wasn’t just decoration—it was proof you’d been somewhere special, somewhere most people only dreamed about.
There’s a quiet rhythm to her stance—the sway of a hula dancer, frozen in time, carrying that early tiki-era energy that swept through post-war America. You can picture this sitting on a bar cart next to a set of glasses, maybe while a record spins in the background and drinks are poured a little stronger than usual. The lava material, the original label, the feel of it in hand—it all pulls you back to a moment when travel felt like discovery, and pieces like this held the story long after the trip was over.
