Vintage 1977-79 Herbarium 4 Specimens Moss Lichen Pond Scum BotanyCollection of four original vintage herbarium specimens dating from 1977–1979, prepared as botanical teaching specimens and bearing original Carolina Biological Supply Company provenance. Rather than ordinary flowering plants, this group represents moss, lichen, liverwort and freshwater algae, making it an especially interesting assemblage of cryptogamic and lower-plant material.
Included are:Reindeer Moss — Cladonia rangiferina Web. Collected November 1979 in Alamance County, North Carolina, at approximately 650 ft.; habitat recorded as pine overstory. Despite its common name, reindeer moss is a lichen.Hair-cap Moss — Polytrichum commune L. Collected May 24, 1977 in Alamance County, North Carolina, at approximately 650 ft.; habitat recorded as pine woods bordering a lake. Numerous individual specimens are mounted across the sheet, several retaining their long, delicate sporophyte stalks and capsules.Marchantia — Marchantia polymorpha. Collected July 1979 in Alamance County, North Carolina, at approximately 650 ft.; habitat recorded as moist loamy soil. Multiple liverwort specimens are mounted to the sheet, several retaining reproductive structures.Pond Scum — Spirogyra sp. Collected November 8, 1978 in Warren County, North Carolina; habitat recorded as floating mats on a freshwater pond. An unusually graphic specimen consisting of numerous preserved masses of the filamentous green alga arranged across the sheet.
Each retains its original printed herbarium identification label recording scientific and common names, family, locality, date and habitat. The versos are stamped CAROLINA BIOLOGICAL SUPPLY COMPANY, BURLINGTON, N.C. 27215.
A particularly appealing vintage scientific teaching collection for collectors of botany, natural history, herbarium specimens, bryology, lichenology, algae, scientific ephemera or unusual botanical display material.
