Up for sale or sale is a rare, matching pair of historic American naval bookends: vintage ship's wheel desktop displays crafted from metal salvaged directly from the U.S. Frigate Constitution ("Old Ironsides") during its landmark 1927–1931 restoration.
Item Details:
Subject: USS Constitution (Keel laid 1794, Rebuilt 1927)
Design: Precision-cast heavy metal in the form of traditional ship's wheels, each featuring the central "Old Ironsides" medallion detailing historic naval engagements (Tripoli, Guerriere, Java, Cyane, Levant).
Base Inscriptions: Raised lettering along the front base of both bookends reads, "THIS MATERIAL WAS TAKEN FROM U.S. FRIGATE CONSTITUTION 1927".
Quantity: Complete Matched Pair (Set of 2).
During the 1920s national campaign to save "Old Ironsides," authentic copper and metal removed from the historic warship were repurposed into limited commemorative objects for supporters. Finding a true matching pair of these heavy bookends is increasingly difficult. A phenomenal display centerpiece for any naval history, maritime antiques, or early Americana collection.
Please examine the attached photographs carefully as they serve as part of the description.
