3.25 x 5" Victorian "Reward of Merit" card awarded to Edith Sanford by M. E. Harrington, who signed as the Teacher. Copyrighted in 1875 by Gibson & Co ... a tiny colorful lithograph scene of a Victorian mother or older sister patiently teaching a young girl how to knit has been afixed to the card .... Historical records from Worcester County, Massachusetts, strongly tie both names written on the card to the town of West Brookfield, Massachusetts, during the late 19th century: The Teacher: M. E. Harrington matches Mary E. Harrington (later Mary E. Harrington Blodgett), a documented schoolteacher from West Brookfield born in the mid-1850s. She would have been in her early twenties when teaching in 1875, and the Student: Edith Sanford matches Edith A. Sanford, born in West Brookfield around 1866–1867. In 1875, she would have been roughly 8 or 9 years old—the exact target age for a student receiving a primary school "Reward of Merit" certificate. .... Code JSB 340
