Vintage Japanese four-panel tabletop byobu folding screen featuring a finely woven textile reproduction of an important Edo-period ukiyo-e work by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III, 1786–1865).The scene is “Tōto Ryōgoku-bashi Kawabiraki Han’ei-zu” (東都両国橋川開繁栄図), commonly translated as Prosperous Scene of the River Opening at Ryōgoku Bridge. The original artwork dates to 1858 (Ansei 5) and depicts the lively summer river-opening festivities at Ryōgoku in Edo, with pleasure boats, lanterns, vendors and crowds along the Sumida River. The original artwork was created as a three-sheet ukiyo-e woodblock triptych. This piece is a later decorative textile reproduction adapted into a four-panel miniature/tabletop folding screen and is not an original 1858 woodblock print. The artwork is printed on a very finely woven textile, with the weave clearly visible under magnification. The material appears consistent with silk; however, exact fiber content has not been independently verified. The screen is beautifully finished with woven brocade-style borders, bright red edging and decorative metal corner fittings.Includes its original fitted Japanese presentation/storage box with attached protective tissue and a Japanese title label corresponding to the artwork. The box also retains an original Hudson’s department store $45.00 price label.Measures approximately 17” wide when fully opened x 9.5” high.Vintage condition with age-related wear consistent with age and storage. A piece of the red plastic is cracked and missing. The presentation box also shows wear. Please review all photographs carefully for condition, measurements, textile detail, Japanese markings and packaging, as they are considered part of the description.A fascinating vintage Japanese decorative art piece and a beautiful display item for collectors of ukiyo-e, Utagawa Kunisada/Toyokuni III, Japanese textiles, miniature byobu and Asian decorative arts.Original presentation box
