RETICULITE, VOLCANIC TEPHRA, KILAUEA VOLCANO 2026, HAWAII.•January 24th 2026 eruptionAuthentic pyroclastic tephra from the 2026 Kīlauea summit eruption, collected during primary fall 10 miles from the eruption.
GEOLOGICAL CONTEXTKīlauea is a shield volcano on the Island of Hawaiʻi, among Earth\'s most active volcanic systems. These eruptions began December 2024 and continues episodically, with lava fountains reaching record heights .Episode 41 (January 24, 2026) produced fountains up to 1,475 feet from dual vents, lofting tephra over the District of Puna, South Hilo, and eastern Kaʻū .
This specimen fell in Fern Forest, approximately 10 miles from Halemaʻumaʻu crater, during this active phase.Tephra is the scientific term for any fragmented material ejected by a volcano . This specimen contains:• Volcanic Ash – Fine pulverized basalt and silica carried by wind and thermal updrafts.• Lapilli – Small cinders with vesicular texture—bubble cavities formed by expanding gas as magma cooled mid-flight.• Reticulite – Delicate, honeycomb-like basaltic foam, extremely lightweight. Fragments may be present. The composition reflects basaltic andesite with vitreous (glassy) components, characteristic of Kīlauea\'s fluid lava fountaining.
Strong updrafts coupled with light winds blowing to the east and north sent lava fragments — called tephra — from those molten rock geysers over much of Puna, into Hilo and along the eastern edge of Kaʻū.I have a multiple specimens available collected on my homestead. Some pieces larger then others. If you make a purchase, I\'ll send you one of the photographed examples of the pieces shown. The other option is the smaller fragments in the zip lock. (You\'ll get the amount shown inside the bag with the green zip lock top)Upon request, I can send photos of a specific piece prior to shipment.Feel free to message with any questions.
