VINTAGE TAPAS CLOTH HANDMADE FROM TREE BARK TONGA ISLANDS
SIZE 70 X 42 INCH OR 178 X 107 CM LARGE CLOTH
Tapa is a fabric made by native Hawaiians from the bast fibres of certain species of trees and shrubs in the orders Rosales and Malvales. The bark is beaten and felted to achieve a soft texture and dye stamped in geometric patterns.

Process: The outer bark is scraped off using shells, and the inner bark is soaked and beaten with a wooden mallet (ike) on an anvil (tutua) until it spreads into a thin, supple sheet. Layers are then felted or pasted together using plant starch.

Decoration: Surfaces are painted, rubbed, stamped, stenciled, or dyed using natural earth pigments, charcoal, and plant saps

Tonga (Ngatu): Known for large sheets featuring structured grid patterns with repeated geometric motifs.
