This Imperial German Hunting Sword (Hirschfanger) belonged to a friend of mine who recently passed away. He set aside vintage military items over the years. This blade was on wall display near his gun cabinet with some hunting trophies.
This Imperial German Hunting Cutlass is as found in my friends collection and measures 25.5 inches overall in the scabbard. It is complete/solid overall and has it\'s original scabbard (see photos). The sword\'s mostly bright 18.5 inch blade remains unsharpened and has 5 inch etched \"In Treue Fest\" panels to each side (see photos). The blade is very clean overall with some very minor spotting near the tip (see photos). The blade ricasso is marked to one side with a what I believe is a very early Alex Coppel trademark (see photos). The crossguard, pommel & attached acorns have beautifully age tarnished overall (see photos). The stag grip is thick with no chips or issues (see photos).
The black leather bodied scabbard is solid overall with a stitched center seam to the reverse (see photos). The seam is excellent with solid stitching & no losses. The brass fittings at the throat & tip have toned nicely, have no dings/dents, match the overall appearance and remain solidly attached (see photos). Frog stud remains tightly affixed as well (see photos). Other than the trademark & the etched panels there are no other markings to the sword.
This Vintage Imperial German Hunting Sword is complete overall and is guaranteed to be an original period piece as described. It shows light use/wear and expected ageing. It would be excellent for display with a Hirschfanger collection. Only one of this maker I have come across.
