RARE ANTIQUE BASS &CO ADVERTISING PUB MIRROR Circa 1900

This is an antique Bass& Co “In Bottle” advertising pub mirror.

This genuine original exampleoriginates from the early 20th century during the Victorian andEdwardian eras.

This belonged to mylater Uncle who was landlord for several pubs in the Leeds and Yorkshire areaduring the 1980s. I last remember it hanging in the Craven Hotel pub in Skipton, Yorkshire.

It features thestylized script of Bass Brewery brand and logo highlighted by its iconic redtriangle trade mark. The Red Triangle logo on Bass Pale Ale wasone of the earliest registered trademarks in the UK

The word “Bass” isdisplayed on the mirror in bold silver script outlined in black. The words

“INBOTTLE” features in block lettering underneath

The mirror has abevelled edge – showing some black marks which are to be expected due to itsage but i no way deflect from the beauty of this item - they add ot it. Please refer to the pics for properviewing.

There is a small stampalong the right edge of the glass which reads “O.C. Hawkes lt. Birmingham”.This was a historic glass manufacturer of the time and they were famous forproducing very high quality reverse-painted advertising mirrors of this type.

In the bottom left ofthe mirror the stamp reads “Property of Bass. Ratcliff & Gretton Ltd” Bass,Ratcliff & Gretton Ltd was a famous historic British brewing company basedin Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, originally established in 1777 by WilliamBass. They expandedrapidly through the 19th century under Michael Thomas Bass and later partnersJohn Ratcliff and John Gretton, becoming the largest brewery in the world bythe late 1800s.

The mirror/sign ismounted in a dark-stained wooded frame – probably oak. At the top middle of theframe and also bottom middle it is etched with “Bass & Co Ltd”

The paper backing hascome dislodged so will have to be replaced. I have managed to take some pics ofthe wooden back beneath the covering. It is all intact and show the actual ageof this item.

This is a genuineantique and is a sought after collectible. I cant find any others with the 2 x stamps on the glass and the \'\'Bass etching in the frame.

It is sentimental but Iwill be happy for this to go to a genuine enthusiast or collector who willmake it an amazing addition to their own collection and to someone who will treasureit and love it as we have.

I think this is a fair price - somewhere in the middle for an example of this kind and age.
