York & 72 Main St. Hartford…”and“Horace Thayer, 127 Main St. Buffalo.”The number 174 also appears beneath the title.Historical & Institutional SignificanceThis is a historically documented 19th-century image associated with the enormous cultural impact of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, first published in 1852.Examples of “Uncle Tom and Little Eva” by E.C. Kellogg & Co. are preserved in major institutional collections. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History holds an example in its Harry T. Peters America on Stone Lithography Collection and catalogs its example to approximately 1852–1856. The William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan also catalogs the image, dating its example to approximately 1852–1855, and the Connecticut Historical Society documents examples of the subject as hand-colored lithographs dating to the early 1850s.This particular example bears both the E.C. Kellogg & Co. lithographer imprint and the Horace Thayer, 127 Main St., Buffalo imprint visible beneath the image.This is a scarce, historically significant image that appears infrequently on the open market. At the time of listing, we were unable to locate another example of this E.C. Kellogg / Horace Thayer issue currently being offered for sale.PresentationThe lithograph is housed behind glass in an older wide wood frame.
