Up for sale is a rare, highly collectible True First Edition, First Issue (First State) copy of Joel Chandler Harris’s classic American masterpiece, Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings, published by D. Appleton and Company in 1881.
This volume meets all rigorous bibliographic criteria established by the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL 7100) for the absolute earliest state of the first printing.
Guaranteed First State Points of Issue Present:
• Page 9 Typo: The very last line of page 9 prints the uncorrected word \"presumptive\" (later changed to \"presumptuous\"). [See photo #X]
• Rear Advertisements: The 8-page advertisement block at the back features \"Appleton\'s New Handy-Volume Series\" on the first page, and \"A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine\" under \"New Books\" on the third page. It contains absolutely no mention of Uncle Remus within the ads, proving it was printed before the book\'s critical acclaim.
• Title Page: Displays the correct 1881 publication date matching the 1880 copyright date on the verso.
• Binding Variant: Bound in the original stamped blue cloth featuring the iconic gilt illustration of Brer Rabbit on the front cover.
Condition Report:
• Exterior: The original blue cloth boards display beautiful, bright gilt decoration on the front cover. There is light shelf wear, rubbing, and minor fraying at the spine head and tail, along with mild corner bumping consistent with a book of this age.
• Interior: The decorative butterfly-patterned endpapers are present. The interior hinges show light straining but remain completely attached. The text block is structurally complete. Pages show a light, uniform age-toning but are clean, free of heavy foxing, water stains, or modern ink markings.
Please review all high-resolution photos carefully, as they serve as the definitive representation of the book\'s cosmetic condition.
