You will not find this anywhere! The "A Case of Funny Things" set from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair (officially the Louisiana Purchase Exposition) is a highly sought-after, exceptionally rare collection of turn-of-the-century adult novelties. Rather than traditional paper postcards, these souvenirs were manufactured as exceptionally thin, oblong aluminum plates. They featured mild, humorous Victorian-era erotic illustrations and captions, often utilizing sequential storytelling gag cards.
- Material and Dimensions: The cards were crafted from thin, lightweight aluminum plates. Each card typically measures approximately 3 5/8" x 1 7/8".
- Set Completeness: While some partial remaining sets found by collectors contain 7 to 10 plates, a complete standalone series generally featured 12 cards.
- The Content: The illustrations balance playful, lighthearted "silly" humor with more provocative "Oh My" scenarios typical of Gilded Age bachelor ephemera. One of the defining plates explicitly says "Souvenir of World's Fair-St Louis" or otherwise details the World's Fair connection.
- Packaging: They were originally distributed inside custom-titled outer novelty cases or matching tin holder boxes.
- Because these were novelty items tucked away in pockets rather than widely preserved family heirlooms, very few survived the last century intact.
- Rarity: Individual metal plates do surface occasionally, but finding a complete or partial set with its original titled holding sleeve or case remains extremely rare
