U.S. Lighthouse Service Brass Oil Lamp Filler – Dr. Louis A. Norton Collection :
$1500.00

An exceptional, museum-quality piece of American maritime history. This authentic U.S. Lighthouse Service brass lamp filler can dates to the turn of the 20th century (c. 1900–1910). Hand-crafted by master metalsmiths at the famed General Light-House Depot Lamp Shop on Staten Island, New York, this rare piece features impeccable provenance from the private estate of renowned maritime historian and author, Dr. Louis Arthur Norton.
Item Specifications & Features
• Material: Heavy-gauge spun brass with a beautiful, uncleaned historic patina.
• Markings: Crisply die-stamped on the base: \"U.S. LIGHT HOUSE SERVICE\".
• Design: Classic stable bell-shaped body, rigid side pouring handle, and a pivoting wire bail handle.
• Lid: Features the original, snug-fitting brass friction cap with an attached retention chain loop.
• Dimensions: [Note: Insert exact height and base diameter measurements here]
Historic Context & Use
Commonly known as a \"lucerne filler\" or lamp feeder, these specialized vessels were issued strictly to lighthouse keepers to clean-pour oil or kerosene into the delicate reservoirs of lighthouse lamps. The bell-bottom design provided stability on moving supply ships or in high-wind stations, while the long, slender spout allowed for precise refueling without spilling precious fuel.
The transition from the \"U.S. Light-House Establishment\" stamp to the \"Service\" stamp narrows the production window of this piece to the pristine late-period craftsmanship of the Staten Island Depot before its reorganization.
Condition Report
• Overall Condition: Excellent antique condition.
• Structure: The spun brass body shows minimal, honest wear consistent with historical utility. No major dents, splits, or repairs. Seams and handles remain completely structurally secure.
• Completeness: Retains its rare, original top friction lid and swinging bail handle.
• Flaws: The tiny wire-tethered cap originally meant for the tip of the pouring spout is absent, which is standard for pieces that saw daily maritime service.
Provenance
Ex-collection of Dr. Louis Arthur Norton, Professor Emeritus (University of Connecticut), esteemed maritime scholar, and legendary collector of elite early American seafaring artifacts and folk art.
