Here is a superb piece of genuine fossil tooth in matrix, from a Triceratops, from the late Cretaceous, as late as 66 million years ago,the end of the Reign of Dinosaurs. The toothmeasures about 1.20\" (30.48mm), not counting the matrix.
The tooth is strong but the matrix is soft. Please do not touch it roughly or pick at it or wet it.
It is from Lance Creek Formation near Newcastle,Wyoming.
Triceratops is one of the most famous of alldinosaurs, with its huge head, tough bony frill, and three sharp horns in thefront. The movie, Jurassic Park, features a sick Triceratops that Ellie caredfor.
The largest Triceratops grew to over 28 feet inlength, and weighed up to 13 tons. It was, however, a plant-eater, with abeaked jaw and hundreds of teeth (up to 800) packed closely together forchewing the plants. There are twodifferent Triceratops: horridus and prorsus. The horridus are always found inground below the prorsus, so they are older. The horridus have a smaller nosehorn and larger beak than the prorsus.
A very interesting and authentic fossilized piece of a famous species ofdinosaur.
