Significance
- The Birth of a Global Franchise: This single comic book marks the very first time the Transformers characters were given a story, distinct personalities, and an overarching lore. Marvel Comics essentially created the foundational mythology that still drives every modern Transformers movie, cartoon, and toy line today.
- Coined Iconic Names: Marvel editor Bob Budiansky and writer Bill Mantlo were responsible for inventing the classic names we know today, including Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Bumblebee, as well as the terms Autobot and Decepticon.
- First Appearance of Core Characters: It stands as the historical first comic book appearance of dozens of legendary characters, including Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Starscream, Soundwave, Grimlock, and Jazz.
- The Marvel Universe Connection: Because it was published by Marvel, this original 80-issue series was explicitly tied into the broader Marvel Universe at the start. The iconic cover features a Spider-Man promotional graphic, and future issues featured guest appearances from characters like Spider-Man and Nick Fury.
