Description
Pair of vintage white porcelain foo dogs, also called Chinese guardian lions or fu dogs, in blanc de chine style.
One is the male, with a paw on an openwork brocade ball. The other is the female, with a cub under the paw. Both have open mouths, fangs, curly manes, collars with bells, and molded rock-style bases with a key-fret border.
Each is about 8 inches tall. Bases are hollow. One is marked 14 inside, the other 71. Those are mold or batch numbers. No factory stamp or reign mark.
Mid-20th-century decorator ware. The same model is sold as Italian 1960s and as Chinese export. These are not marked, so origin is not stated as fact.
Condition is used. Glossy glaze with light wear, chips and roughness on the foot rims, and some surface dirt. No cracks through the bodies and no repairs seen. Photos are of the actual pair.
Sold as a pair only. Ships double-boxed. Local pickup available in San Luis Obispo, California.
