Tiki News #14 Exotica Erotica Otto Von Stroheim Sven Kirsten Tiki Zine 1999Original Issue #14 of Otto von Stroheim’s Tiki News, the influential underground publication devoted to tiki, exotica, Polynesian-pop culture, lounge music, art, architecture, collecting and the mid-century American fascination with the South Pacific. This is the specially themed “Exotica Erotica” issue, originally priced at $2 and published during the late-1990s tiki revival.
Issue #14 is independently documented in a Spring 1999 contemporary review, which specifically identifies it as the Exotica Erotica issue and describes its examination of the eroticized imagery associated with postwar tiki culture. Contents include Sven Kirsten’s “The Link Between Exotica & Exotic Dancing,” Bill Osgerby’s “Paradise of Forofferden Pleasure,” vintage imagery, tiki ephemera, exotic-dancing history, Witco material, a “Primitive Sex Dictionary,” Sumac on Tour and other features exploring the intersection of tiki, exotica, sexuality and American popular culture.
Tiki News was founded by Otto von Stroheim in 1995 as a means of connecting the then-small community of tiki collectors and enthusiasts; early contributors and associates included Sven Kirsten, Shag/Josh Agle, Bosko and Beachbum Berry. The publication became an important document of the formative 1990s tiki revival and ran from 1995–2001.
A particularly desirable themed issue with substantial crossover appeal to collectors of tiki culture, exotica, mid-century Americana, underground zines, lounge culture, vintage erotica and Polynesian-pop ephemera.
