The artwork captures a fierce close-quarters confrontation at Shepherd's Battery centered around a massive 10-inch coastal cannon, portraying Federal Colonel Newton Curtis demanding the surrender of an unyielding, defiant Confederate gunner atop the gun carriage. Künstler prepared for the canvas by touring the surviving fortification grounds with historian Rod Gragg and meticulously verifying environmental details like wind direction and clear weather via period ship logs.
