Texaco 19 Stinson Reliant SR-5F
NC14156 Company Plane Vintage Photo 8x10
Texaco Fleet Plane | 1979 MDC St. Louis PrintDESCRIPTIONThis 8x10 photograph shows Texaco 19, a Stinson SR-5F Reliant from the Texas Company\'s corporate aircraft fleet, parked at North Beach. The fuselage carries a white band lettered TEXACO 19, and the same TEXACO 19 is lettered on the engine cowling. The tail carries the Texaco star in a circle above the words THE TEXAS COMPANY, and a Texaco star roundel is painted on the underside of the wing. Included in the scan set are close views of the fuselage lettering, the tail marking and the nose and cowling, along with the back of the print.A hand-lettered caption affixed to the back identifies the aircraft as a Stinson SR-5F Reliant, NC14156, notes that Texaco 19 was one of many types owned by the company, places it at North Beach and credits the photo to D. Russell. Stinson built 1,327 Reliants of all types between 1933 and 1941. The SR-5 models were powered by Lycoming radial engines, with the SR-5F the Wright-powered version, and one published type history lists just two SR-5F Reliants built, both in 1934 as custom-built variations of the SR-5E, with NC14156 named as one of them.North Beach was the small Queens, New York airfield that opened in 1929 as Glenn H. Curtiss Airport and was replaced by the airport dedicated on October 15, 1939 as New York Municipal Airport, later renamed LaGuardia Airport. Texaco\'s aviation division dates to the late 1920s. The company hired Frank Hawks as Superintendent of its Aviation Division in December 1927, and its lettered planes later carried the Texaco name on record flights, including the Travel Air Mystery Ship Texaco 13 and the Northrop Gamma Sky Chief. The caption does not name a pilot or a mission for Texaco 19, so this listing describes the aircraft and the company fleet it belonged to rather than any single flight. This print is a 1979 company reprint made by McDonnell Douglas (MDC) at St. Louis, not an original 1930s print, and it is offered and priced as such. The back is stamped in blue MDC ST. LOUIS, NOV 14 1979, NEGATIVES NOT FILED, and carries the name and Irvine, California address of Donald and Barbara Aitken. It comes from the Aitken Collection. Scanned at 600dpi.Donald Aitken was a Navy-trained aviator who flew helicopters and then spent his airline career as a United Airlines captain on the 747, 727, 757, 767 and DC-10, retiring in 1996. He grew up watching planes overhead in rural North Dakota and flew radio-controlled airplanes well into his later years.Every effort is made toward fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives. Returns accepted on all items exceeding $25 in cost. All shipments receive rigid, professional packaging, sealed and protected in acid free protectors. Shipping is free and already built into the price, so the BIN price is exactly what you pay, no surprise shipping costs at checkout.CONDITIONBlack and white 8x10 print on cream-toned Kodak paper, with the manufacturer\'s watermark pattern visible on the back. The image is sharp and well defined, with strong contrast and clear lettering on the fuselage, cowling and tail marking. The tail view is a little softer where it is most enlarged. Fine grain and a few small white dust specks show in the image, mostly across the dark fuselage and wing. The registration digits on the rudder are washed out in the print, so the NC number cannot be read on the photograph itself and comes from the caption card. The cream caption card is affixed to the back with its rounded corners intact. No tears, creases or stains are visible in the scans. The back also carries the blue MDC ST. LOUIS, NOV 14 1979, NEGATIVES NOT FILED stamp and the Aitken name and address, as shown. Please review all photos closely, as they are part of the description.
