“THE PORTAL WEAVER”
OJUELOS DE JALISCO RESEARCH COLLECTION
Presented here is an exceptionally unusual polished stone object associated with the greater Ojuelos de Jalisco mystery. Its form appears simultaneously ceremonial, symbolic, wearable, and potentially functional.
The material itself is striking. It contains dramatic red, cream, orange, gray, and mineral-like banding throughout the body, producing an almost conglomerate appearance while still taking an exceptionally high polish.
As a lapidary artist, one of the characteristics that immediately stands out to me is the quality of the finish. The surface has been worked to a remarkable gloss, requiring substantial shaping, progressive abrasion, and final polishing.
I have considered the possibility that this unusual material could represent some form of engineered or geopolymer-like stone, but no laboratory identification has been established, so that remains part of the investigation.
MULTI-FUNCTION FORM
The lower edge contains five deeply cut openings, giving the piece an unusual comb, serrated tool, or textile-working appearance.
One possibility is that cords could have been separated through these openings for weaving, knotting, net making, or creating fishing net patterns.
Its form also visually recalls certain ancient perforated jade ornaments and pectorals, including examples from Neolithic China, although no direct cultural connection is being claimed.
The pointed and serrated silhouette can additionally resemble a ceremonial blade, axe, hatchet, or broad projectile form.
Upper openings also suggest that it may have been suspended or worn.
It therefore presents the possibility of a multi-purpose object: tool, amulet, ceremonial implement, or some combination of these functions.
SKULL & CALENDAR SIDE
One face contains an engraved skull-like image.
Above its crown is a remarkable sequence of circular and geometric symbols. Their arrangement resembles a counting sequence, celestial markers, or the repeating divisions found around calendrical compositions.
Whether these marks represent numbers, cycles, celestial bodies, timekeeping, or purely symbolic decoration remains unknown.
The skull itself could represent death, ancestry, transformation, initiation, or passage between states of existence.
THE CROUCHING BEING
The opposite face carries a much more complex scene.
A humanoid figure appears in a tightly crouched position with the knees drawn upward.
This fetal-like posture is especially interesting because it can symbolically suggest birth, rebirth, return to origin, compression, preparation, or passage through an opening or threshold.
Throughout my comparative research into the Ojuelos imagery, similarly compressed figures sometimes appear in scenes that can be interpreted as transitions between spaces or realms.
That remains an interpretive observation rather than a confirmed translation.
OBJECT IN THE HAND
The figure appears to hold an unusual spiral or shell-like form.
It resembles a conch, fractal spiral, ceremonial object, or possibly a symbolic representation of technology.
Behind or above the being is another complex form arching over the back and head. It could be interpreted as an elaborate headdress, backpack-like device, ceremonial equipment, or another unknown symbolic element.
Directly in front of the figure is a large circular form that can reasonably be read as a planet, celestial body, disc, or portal-like object.
Together, the imagery creates the impression of a being interacting with an object or technology in proximity to a celestial sphere.
POSSIBLE PORTAL NARRATIVE
One possible symbolic reading of the entire piece is:
Death or transformation → encoded cycles → fetal or rebirth posture → interaction with technology or sacred knowledge → transition toward another celestial realm.
This would make the five-opening tool form especially intriguing. What appears practical may simultaneously have carried ceremonial or cosmological meaning.
The name “The Portal Weaver” reflects both possibilities: a physical object potentially capable of organizing or weaving cords, and a symbolic object depicting the weaving together of worlds, cycles, birth, death, and celestial movement.
THE GREATER OJUELOS MYSTERY
The piece shares characteristics frequently observed throughout the Ojuelos material: unusual stone composition, highly polished surfaces, celestial symbolism, humanoid figures, geometric imagery, and objects whose practical and ceremonial functions appear to overlap.
No definitive archaeological date, material identification, or literal translation of the imagery is being claimed.
It is offered as a collectible research object associated with the continuing Ojuelos de Jalisco mystery.
