This submarine warfare insignia was designed as a tribute to the Fleet Boats of WWII. The dolphins were made with slightly larger heads to align with the original design approved by the Acting Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. back in 1924 (photo added).
While these dolphins cannot be found in Navy Exchanges and uniform shops, they meet the definition of the Submarine Warfare Insignia as described in U.S. Navy Uniform Regulations (Section 5201).
Submarine Warfare (SS) Officer. A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing the bow view of a submarine proceeding on the surface with bow planes rigged for diving; flanked by dolphins in horizontal position, their heads resting on upper edge of bow planes.
Additionally, their size conforms to traditional sized dolphins. They are 2-13/16" wide by 7/8" high. The design drawing with dimensions has also been added.
