Socony Pegasus Flying Horse Bellanca
Airplane Photo 8x10 Vintage Mobil Aviation
Pre-Mobil Pegasus, 1979 MDC Print, Aitken CollectionDESCRIPTIONThis 8x10 black and white photograph is a close view of the nose and tail of a cabin monoplane lettered SOCONY on the rear fuselage, with the Pegasus flying horse on the fuselage and again on the fin, and the marking NC 26 on the rudder. The airfoil-section lift struts are a Bellanca signature, and the aircraft also has wheel-pants landing gear and a long row of cabin windows. A hangar and a line of parked vehicles show at the field behind it.The Pegasus began as a Vacuum Oil Company trademark, registered in 1911 by its Cape Town, South Africa subsidiary. Standard Oil Company of New York, known as Socony, took the flying horse as its corporate symbol after the two companies merged in 1931 to form Socony-Vacuum, so a Socony airplane wearing the Pegasus points to 1931 or later. The same winged horse went on to become the Mobil emblem, which makes this a photograph of a famous brand mark on an airplane before the Mobil name existed. From the AITKEN COLLECTION. This is a 1979 company print made by McDonnell Douglas Corporation (MDC) at St. Louis, not an original 1930s print, and it is offered and priced as such. The reverse is stamped MDC ST. LOUIS, OCT 2 1979, NEGATIVES NOT FILED, and carries an owner's stamp for Donald and Barbara Aitken of Irvine, California. Scanned at 600dpi.Donald Aitken was a Navy-trained aviator who flew helicopters and then spent his airline career as a United Airlines captain on the 747, 727, 757, 767 and DC-10, retiring in 1996. He grew up watching planes overhead in rural North Dakota and flew radio-controlled airplanes well into his later years.Every effort is made toward fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives. This is a close view of the nose, tail and landing gear rather than a full side profile, and the SOCONY lettering, both Pegasus emblems and the NC 26 marking are readable in the scans. Focus is soft in places and the print shows fine grain and scattered dust specks, which come from the original photograph and not from wear. The small lettering on the fin is too faint to read. The image does not fill the sheet on every side, and blank margins show along the edges, as pictured. No tears, creases or stains are visible in the scans. The reverse shows the blue MDC ST. LOUIS stamp, a date stamp reading OCT 2 1979 with some ink smudging in the day, the NEGATIVES NOT FILED stamp and the typed Aitken owner stamp, all as pictured. Please review all photos closely, as they are part of the description.
