Signed Dated \'62 MCM Hand Tooled Leather Studio Art Box Abstract Modernist
Unusual signed and dated mid-century hand-tooled leather studio art box, dating to 1962. This long rectangular box is completely leather covered and features extensive hand-incised/tool-worked decoration. Rather than a repeating stamped pattern, the various surfaces display different abstract modernist compositions, incorporating geometric and stylized figural forms. The decoration continues around the sides and ends of the box, with additional tooled decoration on the underside of the removable lid. The bottom bears a hand-applied artist\'s signature or monogram followed by “62,” believed to represent 1962.The lid lifts completely off rather than being hinged. The interior consists of one long, uninterrupted compartment with a firm leather-lined bottom and no padding, dividers or fitted compartments.Extensive research has not produced another identical example or a reliable attribution to a specific maker. The hand-worked decoration, differing designs on the individual surfaces, signed/dated underside and overall construction suggest an individually produced mid-century studio-craft piece rather than an ordinary mass-produced leather box.Very good vintage condition as shown in photos.
