SHOWCASE #24 — the last audition.

CGC 6.0 (Fine) · Light Tan to Off-White Pages · Third Appearance of the Silver Age Green Lantern

A power ring that can conjure almost anything—and a creature it cannot stop. Gil Kane and Joe Giella’s cover puts Hal Jordan down on one knee on a suspension bridge, facing yellow eye beams against which his greatest weapon is powerless. For a hero still making his introduction to newsstand readers, it is a striking predicament.

Cover-dated January–February 1960,Showcase#24 is the third and final issue of Green Lantern’s original tryout run. Inside, John Broome, Kane and Giella give Hal two different kinds of trouble. In “The Secret of the Black Museum!” stolen experimental aircraft plans draw him into a spy mystery. In “The Creature That Couldn’t Die!” a life-form exposed to cosmic rays becomes a giant monster, leaving Green Lantern to find a way to halt its destruction.

That second adventure gets at the appeal of these early stories. The ring gives Hal extraordinary power, but its weakness against yellow means he still has to think his way out. The spectacle brings you in; the problem keeps you reading.

FollowingShowcase#22 and #23, this issue completes the three-part introduction that precededGreen Lantern#1 later in 1960. For a collector assembling Hal Jordan’s earliest appearances, it closes the opening chapter.

The back cover adds a smaller piece of period character: a full-page Daisy Air Rifles advertisement, with a Christmas-morning photo story about a boy named Bob and his new pump gun. Superhero fantasy on the front, a different kind of childhood wish on the back.

This copy isCGC 6.0, Fine, with light tan to off-white pages—Hal Jordan’s third appearance, featuring two complete early adventures and a cover built around his most recognizable weakness.

Ships in a Gemini graded-comic mailer with honeycomb kraft void fill, fully insured, within one business day of cleared payment.
