History of Tom Platz Tom Platz (born Thomas Steven Platz on June 26, 1955, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma) is a legendary American professional bodybuilder, often called the "Quadfather," "Quadzilla," or "Golden Eagle." He is famous for having what many consider the greatest leg development in bodybuilding history, with quads that measured over 30 inches (76+ cm) at their peak, defined by extreme size, separation, and striations.
Platz was inspired to train after seeing images of bodybuilders like Dave Draper as a child. Despite early challenges (including a lower back issue that initially hindered squatting and earning him the nickname of "the guy with skinny legs"), he transformed through dedicated training, learning proper squatting technique from Olympic weightlifters. He moved to Venice, California, in 1977 with little money and trained at the iconic Gold’s Gym.
His competitive career (roughly 1973–1987) included standout achievements like winning the 1978 Mr. America and placing 3rd at the 1981 Mr. Olympia (behind Franco and Chris Dickerson), where his legs famously stole the show.
He competed against icons like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Even though he never won the Olympia, his influence on leg training and squatting form remains massive today.
The Artist / Creator of the Bobble Head The "Mr. Legs" (or "Bobble-Quad") hand-painted bobblehead appears to be a limited-edition with Waco Collectibles (Amos as CEO). Sculptor/painter Brandon Hendrickson has been credited for working on the painting and creation process.
It was developed over an extended period (with mentions of a year+ of design) as an exclusive tribute, celebrating Platz’s legacy. These are hand-painted, high-detail pieces targeted at collectors.
