Black tourmaline — schorl — is one of the most structurally dramatic minerals in the pegmatite world, and this 225-gram specimen from Skardu, Pakistan shows exactly why. Multiple deeply striated prismatic crystals cross each other at bold angles on a sparkling grey mica and feldspar matrix, creating a composition that looks almost like calligraphy written in black crystal. The submetallic luster on the crystal faces catches light along every striation. A strong display piece with the kind of graphic clarity that works equally well in a mineral collection or on a shelf.
