This postcard shows the interior of the Salle des Etats Generaux in the Louis XII wing of the Chateau de Blois in France, featuring a vaulted ceiling supported by arched columns, patterned walls, and a large fireplace. The Salle des Etats Generaux is located within the Royal Chateau de Blois in the Loir-et-Cher department of France. Built in 1214 by Count Thibaut VI, it is recognized as the oldest surviving secular Gothic hall in France.Originally serving as a court of justice and a reception hall for the Counts of Blois, the impressive space is characterized by its two naves separated by a central row of columns. The hall gained its current name from its significant role during the French Wars of Religion. King Henry III convened the Estates General a legislative and consultative assembly of the different classes of French subjects in this room twice, first in 1576 and again in 1588.The 1588 assembly was particularly notable as it occurred just before the assassination of the Duke of Guise, which took place within the chateau.Today, the Chateau de Blois is a major tourist attraction and a designated historical monument.* A Papeghin Paris-Tours
