Scarce original 1897 Montgomery Ward Uncle Sam Victorian advertising featuring a colorful patriotic scene of Uncle Sam carrying an enormous U.S. Mail globe in front of the U.S. Capitol.
This unusual piece of 19th-century Americana advertised Montgomery Ward's Spring & Summer 1897 Catalogue & Buyers' Guide No. 61.
Believed to have originated as a promotional insert in a larger publication, rather than a traditional collectible trade card. Printed on lightweight, magazine-style paper, surviving examples of this historic advertising piece appear exceptionally difficult to find, particularly in this condition. After 30+ years of collecting, my collector spidey sense tells me this one is something special!
The exact illustration is documented in Doug Boilesen's Phonographia historical collection, "Uncle Sam and Brother Jonathan: Salesmen 1876–1900."
The reverse features colorful 1897 calendars, original Montgomery Ward advertising, and the Photo Colotype Co., Chicago printer's credit.
Measures approximately 5½" x just under 4½".
Original antique condition with age-related toning and wear. Please review photos for details.
Authentic 1897 advertising print, not a reproduction. Catalog not included.
