Robert E Lee Hand Written & Signed Letter dated August 15, 1853 - Arlington, VA:
$4299.00

A beautifully framed letter with accompanying photo print and brass detail plate from one of the most famous persons involved in the Civil War besides President Lincoln himself, Robert E Lee.

This letter was placed in a mylar sleeve for protection before being carefully framed and is easily & fully removable without any damage. I had personally purchased this from the world famous collectibles sale house Heritage sales a few years ago. I have included 2 photos from the sale house listing itself and the description below.

Robert E. Lee Autograph Letter Signed "R. E. Lee." Two pages on a bifolium, 4.5" x 7", Arlington, August 15, 1853, to the Rev. C. B. Dana. Written during his stint as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point to the Reverend Charles Backus Dana (1806-1873), rector of Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia. He writes:

"Dear Sir I was disappointed in my last two visits to Alex[andria] at not finding you home. I have desired for some time to contribute to the fund for the endowment of the Professorships at the Theol[ogical] Seminary & had intended to have left with you the enclosed sum for the purpose. May I ask you to give it the proper direction merely under the head of 'Donation.' I enclose $50 which I hope will reach you safely.

We expect to depart tomorrow for West Point - Mr. C accompanies us. With prayers for your health & happiness I remain your friend & servant."

Condition: Light toning to paper, old smoothed fold creases, trivial mounting remnants on the verso, otherwise a bright and legible letter. Excellent condition.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.

I am not a professional historical dealer so please no zero or recent negative response buyers. This comes from my personal collection. All sales final, no returns accepted. Please feel free to ask any questions prior to purchasing.
