Product Description
Face Value marks a pivotal moment in music history, where Phil Collins transitioned from Genesis' drummer to a global solo sensation. Released in 1981, the album is a deeply personal and artistic endeavor that captures the raw emotions surrounding Collins' divorce from his first wife. He masterfully integrates elements of soul, art-pop, and R&B to create a cohesive masterpiece.
The album is renowned for its groundbreaking production, particularly the "gated reverb" drum sound, which became iconic in the 1980s. This technique is most evident in the track "In the Air Tonight," celebrated for its legendary drum fill. Collins' versatility is showcased through collaborations with the Phenix Horns, infusing vibrant funk into tracks like "I Missed Again," while balancing minimalistic folk elements in "The Roof Is Leaking."
Highlights of this special release include:
- A new interview with Phil Collins discussing the album's creation and impact.
- Rare, stripped-back performances of "In The Air Tonight" and "The Roof Is Leaking" from The Other Secret Policeman's Ball.
- Two previously unreleased live performances from Perkins Palace in 1982 and Irvine Meadows in 1985.
- An unreleased outtake of Collins' experimental cover of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows."
- A previously unreleased full version of "Over The Rainbow," expanding on the excerpt from the original album.
