Scarce early U.S. military aviation marksmanship badge identified as a Distinguished Aerial Gunner Badge.
The upper suspension bar is embossed DISTINGUISHED.
Suspended below by two rings is a target-form medal featuring concentric target rings with a winged bullet projectile mounted vertically through the center.
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum documents this distinctive badge design as a United States Army Air Forces Distinguished Aerial Gunner Badge and describes it as an award given to distinguished aerial gunners in competition prior to World War II.
This is a particularly interesting piece of early American military aviation and aerial-gunnery history.
The badge shows considerable age-related wear, tarnish, finish loss, scratches, darkening and patina and has been left as found.
No cleaning or restoration has been performed.
Please review the photographs carefully for condition and construction.
