A rare and historically significant set of nine Maryland State Seal Staff Officer buttons still attached to their original period display card. (NOTE: I had to remove one to get a picture of the backmark. It can be put back on but will not be snug as the cardboard is ancient)
Backmarks: 9 buttons feature the "Horstmann Bros & Co Phil" depressed backmark, dating them to the late 19th-century militia era (c.1875-1893). All the backmarks are the same. The cuff size are obviously smaller but the same wording and detail.
Key Feature:
The reverse of the original cardboard mount is labeled "Confederate" in period handwriting. In the post-war era, Maryland buttons were frequently marketed as Confederate souvenirs due to the state's strong Southern sympathies during the war.
Provenance:
Found in Shepherdstown, WV. Carded sets like this are highly sought after by Maryland and Civil War collectors for their display value.
Do not miss this chance to own a piece of regional history!
