A remarkable and rare example of Mexican folk art, this finely crafted figure depicts a colonial-era pottery merchant in mid-stride, fully loaded with his wares. Standing 11.5 inches tall on a wooden base, this piece demonstrates exceptional artisanship that rewards close inspection from every angle.
The figure's body is constructed from lacquered papier-mâché, rendered with striking detail — from the wide-brimmed traveling hat and billowing white trousers to the weathered, expressive face of a seasoned merchant. His clothing shows careful attention to texture and aging, with rich brown tones suggesting a life on the road.
What truly sets this piece apart is its fully realized 360° detail: the front shows the merchant carrying two shallow wooden dish pans, while the back — equally detailed — shows him loaded with a full collection of miniature wooden pots and vessels, individually crafted and attached. This level of dedication to detail, even where a viewer might never look, speaks to the seriousness of the original artist.
The facial features are consistent with colonial-era Mexican folk art traditions depicting mestizo or Spanish merchant figures of the 17th-19th centuries.
