A rare and a unique find in this small cast iron sign/plaque, stating where to ring the "Office Bell"! A Late 19th - Early 20th Century piece that is the first of its kind that we've come across. A cast iron frame around this glass protected and hand painted sign. The execution on the words is meticulous, and fits the American vernacular lettering of the era. The inside panel has heavy crazing and which we think was painted on a board of sort. When turning it around you'll see it's plastered in. But the most lovely part of this is piece is the lettering. The black capitals are crisp and evenly spaced; done in a Victorian style with narrow, tall proportions and sharply flared, spurred serifs. Note for example the L's in Bell end in pointed, barbed feet.
The frame has built in mounting holes to screw it into the wall/door. But it's good to be aware that this type of sign/plaque would have marked a mechanical doorbell or desk bell in a shop, hotel, or business. Who would have appeared when one rang this bell? It's a mystery.
