An exceptional and complete example of late 19th-century decorative ceramics, this antique Victorian pitcher and six mug cup set, dating to circa 1890, beautifully captures the era’s fascination with both fine craftsmanship and canine subjects. Each piece is richly hand-painted with a distinct dog portrait, rendered in remarkable detail against a dramatic ground that enhances the lifelike expression and character of each breed. The set features a charming variety of dogs, including a Pointer, Rottweiler, Basset Hound, Bulldog, Dalmatian, and St. Bernard—each carefully depicted with individualized features that speak to the skill of the decorator.Adding to the set’s visual appeal are the elegant silver metallic rims and handles, which provide a striking contrast to the warm tones of the bodies while reflecting light with a refined brilliance. The mugs each measure 5.25 inches high, 5.5 inches wide, and 4.25 inches deep. The impressive pitcher stands 12.5 inches high, 7.75 inches wide, and 6.5 inches deep, making it a true focal point. Good antique condition given the edge, there is one rim chip to one mug. Surface wear/scratches to handles. Some small areas of paint loss. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.Every piece is marked “W.H. Taltler Decorators,” a firm associated with high-quality Victorian-era ceramic decoration. During this period, such decorating studios played an important role in enhancing blank wares with hand-painted scenes, catering to a growing market that prized both artistry and function. Sets like this were often produced for the upper-middle class, combining everyday usability with decorative sophistication.Whether displayed in a traditional bar setting, an English country-style interior, or as part of a curated collection, this complete set is both a conversation piece and a celebration of Victorian taste—perfect for dog lovers, collectors, and those drawn to timeless antique charm. This set will be carefully packed.
