Peggy Bell was born in England, a daughter of Elkin Josiah Salaman 1870–1919 and Florence Helen Louise Fox 1877–1958. She had siblings Edmund Myer Fox 1903–1970, Hugh Lind 1906–1943, and Aurick Elizabeth Luz 1912–2014.
Peggy was given a 1930 Puss Moth airplane for her birthday in June 1931 by her mother, after growing "tired of the drawing-rooms of London's fashionable Mayfair", as a newspaper reported. She named it "The Good Hope". From October 30 to November 5, 1931, she and co-pilot/navigator A. Gordon Store, flew in it from London to Cape Town, South Africa.
She was 19 years old and was referred to as a debutante and society girl in newspaper articles on her flight. She took a revolver and evening dress with her. This flight set a new record for the 6,150 mile distance, 64 hours, beating the previous one by 36 hours. She was given two lion cubs by natives in the Sudan, Juba and Joker, which were sent by boat from Cape Town to the London Zoo.
Peggy was given the British Aviatrix Harmon Trophy in 1931.
