The highlight of this unique image is an original, fragile piece of paper ephemera applied directly to the right side of the layout. The paper is an actual 1888 railroad excursion advertisement flyer. It clearly features the Illinois Central Railroad insignia and reads "GO TO MOBILE" for the "Interstate Military Competition" scheduled for Monday, "Aug. 30" (which matches the massive national state militia drill encampments hosted in Mobile, Alabama, in 1888). The flyer displays beautiful graphic art featuring a bald eagle, a patriotic shield, and tiny uniform-clad soldiers. Because tintypes are unique, direct-positive images exposed straight onto iron plates, the text on the flyer is permanently printed in reverse (mirror-imaged), a fascinating testament to the physics of 19th-century photography!
The portrait features two impeccably dressed gentlemen. The seated man sports a styled handlebar mustache, a dark buttoned jacket, and holds a bowler hat on his knee. His companion stands beside him in a long duster coat. The luxurious studio setting is anchored by a draped patterned textile prop featuring a prominent Greek Key geometric border motif.
