Rare 0.3” Hexanchus agassizi Fossil Shark Tooth – Sixgill Cow Shark – Isle of Sheppey, UK – Eocene — Up for sale is a 0.3” (~7.6 mm) fossil tooth of Hexanchus agassizi from the famous London Clay Formation of the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, England, dating to the Early Eocene (Ypresian), roughly 50–54 million years ago. H. agassizi was an extinct member of Hexanchidae, the ancient cow-shark family whose surviving relatives include modern sixgill sharks. The identification is well established for the London Clay fauna, and H. agassizi was originally described from the Ypresian London Basin. Its lower lateral teeth have the unmistakable comb-like hexanchid design, with a series of multiple pointed cusps arranged along a single elongated root; the original diagnosis describes lateral teeth carrying approximately 7–10 cusps and reaching no more than about 13 mm, making this 0.3” specimen a nice representative example. Sheppey is one of Britain’s classic fossil localities, renowned for an exceptionally diverse Eocene marine fish and shark assemblage, including several different cow-shark taxa. The exact 0.3” fossil tooth shown in the listing photographs is the specimen you will receive. An excellent addition for collectors of cow sharks, Eocene sharks, British fossils, London Clay fossils, and unusual shark dentitions.
