RARE WWI 1914 British 18 PR Artillery Shell Trench Art 11” Vase VSM WELL MARKED:
$249.99

Exceptional Early World War I British Trench Art Shell Vase – Dated 1914

Offered is an exceptional original World War I British trench art vase crafted from a genuine QF 18-Pounder (84 mm) Mark II artillery cartridge case.

The base is clearly headstamped:

18 PR – British QF 18-Pounder artillery cartridge case (84 mm)

Mark II

V.S.M. – Vickers Sons & Maxim

1914 manufacture date

Additional British military inspection and production markings

The shell has been expertly transformed into a decorative trench art vase featuring beautifully executed repoussé floral decoration, a beaded rim, elegant fluted pedestal base, and large raised lettering reading "VUERNE."

The meaning of the inscription remains uncertain, but it may reference Veurne (Furnes), Belgium, an important British and Belgian military headquarters and logistics center during World War I. Regardless of its exact interpretation, the raised lettering adds a distinctive and uncommon feature to this impressive example.

Unlike many trench art shell cases that feature simple engraved decoration, this vase displays extensive repoussé metalwork with deep relief floral motifs, demonstrating a significantly higher level of craftsmanship.

Measurements

Height: Approximately 11.5 inches

Constructed from an original 84 mm British QF 18-Pounder cartridge case

Manufactured by Vickers Sons & Maxim

Dated 1914

Condition

Excellent antique condition with an attractive original aged patina. Displays expected wear and oxidation consistent with age and military use. No major damage observed. SMALL BLEMISH ON THE TOP RIM AS SHOWN IN LAST PHOTO. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.

Collector's Notes

The British QF 18-Pounder was the principal field gun of the British Army during the First World War. Early 1914-dated shell cases are particularly desirable to collectors, and examples with elaborate repoussé decoration are considerably less common than standard engraved trench art.

An outstanding display piece for collectors of:

WWI militaria

British military antiques

Trench art

Artillery memorabilia

Historic decorative arts
