RARE Vintage ART DECO Opaline Black Glass CASKET BOX W Chrome Lid/ Bakelite Knob
Size 9" long x 5" wide x 2.25" high to top of knob on lid when lid is on. With lid off, the black glass base is 1 1/8" high.
There are 4 molded compartments inside the glass of equal size, approx. 4 1/8" x 2 1/8", taking into account that the corner edges are slanted
Features EXTREMELY HEAVY [thick and substantial] beautiful Black Opaline glass with a high-gloss finish in a fabulous rectangular shape known as a 'casket box'. These were mainly made in France in the 1920s and early 1930s.
The glass is beautifully crafted- there is a bumped-in ledge along the border surround, which allows the chrome lid to fit on top and not slide.
The corners of the 'casket box' are all angled [slanted] so that the box technically has 8 sides.
Lid is a matching shape and made of mirror polished, silver chrome metal. It has a gorgeous grooved pattern of a large cross on the top, which matches the shape of the glass compartments beneath it.
Top of the chrome lid has a genuine black Bakelite knob which also features a carved spiral groove for added interest.
An extremely unusual box, almost impossible to find- quite rare.
This is a STUNNING piece of opaline Art Glass and a striking example of a classic Art Deco design
These would have been used either on a lady's or gentleman's dresser to hold makeup, toiletries or jewelry items. From the long shape of the compartments, it could also have been used as a marvelous cigarette box to be placed out on a table.
Lid is slightly domed
Lid simply lifts on and off of the box and doesn't snap or push down, this was made deliberately like this to protect the glass from flaking or chipping where it makes contact.
Excellent condition for age, no flaws or damage, beautiful. No nicks chips cracks flakes scratches or repair to glass whatsoever. The chrome lid is not bent or warped, and has no dents. The mirror finish does show some very faint surface scratches [super minor] which are not a distraction and expected for age and use. On the inside of the lid where the screw holds the Bakelite knob on is some faint rust color around the screw- incredibly tiny. Bakelite knob is without any damage and is not loose or wobbly. Lid is in perfect working order. See all pics and use zoom, size measurements & details in description. Any white spots or reflections on the chrome or glass are simply ambient reflections and not actually on the box.
