RARE “AUTO-CLE’”SOCKET SET FROM 1905
You are buying an original Auto-Cle socket wrench set widely recognized as the very first interchangeable socket set marketed for automobiles in American history. The Quincy, Manchester, Sargent Company (Q.M.S.) owned the rights and originally marketed these sets out of their Plainfield, NJ office between late 1905 and 1908.The top label of the wooden box features the text "AUTO-CLÉ SOCKET WRENCH SET" and explicitly names "Quincy, Manchester, Sargent Co. - Plainfield, N.J." There is also a label on the unique "pepper-mill" or cylinder-style ratcheting wrench handle enclosed in the kit. The inside of the box has numbers 4814 engraved on it.
The set is in a beautiful, heavily crafted dovetailed wooden boxes with working latches. The patina of the box is great, but there are a few stains and normal wear from use. The box measures 14 ¾ inches by 5.5 inches by 5.5 inches. See photos.
The set may be missing at least two of its unique thin-walled pressed-steel sockets due to two pegs missing tools. To the best of our knowledge, all parts are original. See photos. No returns. Feel free to ask questions.
This is a set sale of $350.00 plus shipping of $25.90 (ground) in continental United States.
