A Remarkable Piece of Coffee History
This is a professional copper cupping kettle manufactured by Jabez Burns & Sons, Inc. of New York. Unlike standard household tea kettles, this was an industrial-grade tool designed for professional coffee tasting and laboratory use in the late 1800s.
The Details:
- Hallmark: Clearly stamped with the "JB & S" mark on the top.
- Construction: Features heavy dovetail/brazed seams and a gooseneck spout designed for a precise pour. The base features a professional-grade "water-leg" style indentation for rapid boiling.
- Condition: Beautiful, unpolished "chocolate" patina with original verdigris. Shows honest wear from industrial use, including minor dents and pitting that add to its character. The original turned wood handle is intact and secure.
- Dimensions: Approximately 12" diameter at the base (as shown in photos).
Collector’s Note: Jabez Burns revolutionized the coffee industry with the invention of the modern roaster. His laboratory kettles are rare survivals of the 19th-century New York coffee trade.
