A piece of massive nickel-copper sulfide ore hosts preferentially oriented hexagonal crystals of brassy pyrrhotite to 0.8cm.Full locality: 1505 Primary Stope, 265 Level, Eagle Mine, Marquette County, MichiganOverall specimen dimensions: 3.1 x 1.6 x 0.9 centimeters
Eagle Mine is a currently operating nickel-copper mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that started production in 2014. It primarily produces massive sulfide ore with no crystalline material. However, in 2015 and 2016, the mine was producing ore from extremely high-grade stopes in the upper levels of the mine and a fault zone was found running from 265 to 190 levels that occasionally produced open pockets. These pockets were lined with calcite and crystalline sulfides such as this specimen. Specimens from this mine are extremely rare and are a must-have for any Michigan collector.
