Dobel Volzemer Stein AK 1940 Schwarzwald Hotel Post Hindenburg 6 Pfennig

Bitte, liebes Frl. [Brehke], grüßen Sie die Anderen! [Schlussworte teilweise unleserlich.]

Herzl. Grüße Ihre [A. …, Unterschrift Brehke]

Eine historische Ansichtskarte wie abgebildet, einschließlich Briefmarke. Der Verkauf erfolgt unter Ausschluss der Volzemer Stein Black Forest Postcard 1940 Hotel Post Hindenburg Stamp

Historic monochrome postcard showing the Volzemer Stein rock formation near Dobel in Germany’s Black Forest, with two visitors among the large sandstone blocks.

The reverse carries a handwritten holiday message dated 20 August 1940, addressed to Berlin, and an advertisement for Hotel und Pension Post, Dobel, proprietor August Künzer.

Historical background

The Volzemer Steine are distinctive sandstone formations near Dobel in the northern Black Forest. Their particularly hard, quartz-rich stone was historically suitable for making millstones. The photograph records the rocks as a destination for visitors during the early development of Black Forest tourism.

English translation of the message

Best-effort reading, with punctuation added and abbreviations expanded. Uncertain passages are marked in brackets.

“20 August 1940

Dear Miss [Brehke],

Warm greetings from the beautiful Black Forest. You know the Black Forest too. Today I was in Herrenalb ([unclear aside]), where we all stayed together [at that time?].

On Thursday I intend to travel to the Alb. I am quite well so far, although I feel rather languid from the [climate?], all the lying down and the plentiful fresh air. But after about eight days, things will improve.

Please, dear Miss [Brehke], give my regards to the others! [Closing words partly illegible.]

Warm regards, yours, [A. …, signature Brehke]
Berlin O. 112
Finowstr. 22 [I]”

An additional handwritten numerical annotation appears beside the destination.

Stamp and indicative value

Green 6-pfennig Hindenburg stamp, Deutsches Reich, probably Michel 516. Watermark and variety have not been checked. Cancellation present, but its place and date are not reliably readable.

A comparable used Michel 516 is currently advertised at approximately €1 excluding postage. This is an asking-price comparison, not a verified sale or guaranteed valuation of this stamp. Its ordinary individual value is likely below €1. The stamp is included and remains attached to the postcard.

Date and condition

Handwritten date: 20 August 1940. The postcard’s precise production year is unknown.

Age-related wear, including paper toning, edge and corner wear and noticeable creasing, particularly at the upper-left corner of the picture side, with small areas of surface paper damage. Reverse handwritten, addressed and franked.

Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

One historic postcard as pictured, including its stamp. Smoke-free household.
