Pair of Contemporary Native American Stoneware Sculptures by Peter B. Jones (Onondaga Nation, b. 1947) – Dated 1987
Description: This is a truly magnificent, complementary pair of shroud-wrapped "Blanket Indian" figures by the highly acclaimed contemporary Native American artist and sculptor, Peter B. Jones (Geh-A).
Jones studied under the iconic Hopi artist Otellie Loloma at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). He is widely credited with single-handedly reviving and honoring traditional pre-colonial Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) pottery techniques while instilling deep, expressive human emotion into modern, individual form.
These striking columnar figures showcase incredibly intricate facial sculpting paired with heavily stylized, earthy textures that echo regional oral histories and indigenous identity. One figure features a stunning, multi-toned natural clay slip mimicking woven fabric texturing, while the other is finished in a clean, elegant white-washed finish.
Both pieces prominently bear the artist's incised signature "P.B. Jones" and the year '87 on the lower back edge.
Dimensions:
Taller Figure (White): 14 inches tall
Shorter Figure (Brown): 12.5 inches tall
Condition: Excellent vintage/contemporary condition. No chips, cracks, repairs, or structural issues. The unglazed stoneware has beautifully preserved earthy textures.
Please review all high-resolution photos as they serve as part of the physical description.
